WRITING TOPICS: COUNTLESS

WE HAVE AS MANY WRITING TOPICS AS WE HAVE THOUGHTS.
WE HAVE AS MANY WRITING TOPICS AS WE HAVE THOUGHTS.

79 ARTICLES AND COUNTING

Yesterday, on my part time job, I mentioned to my boss that I now had 76 articles up on hubpages and googlesense. Her comment was not uncommon. "How do you come up with that many things to write about?' she asked. I could have asked her, how do you keep from finding that many things to write about? I failed to mention that I also have about that many articles on line that were written under the direction of demand Studios for $15 each, before I discovered hubpages and googlesense. Obviously, finding topics is not a problem for me.

WRITING IDEAS

Writing topics are everywhere, including this one, found in my boss' question about where and how I find them. In fact, virtually every part of my life is up for grabs, when it comes to writing. My underemployment, my financial loss, my dreams, my writing, my fantasies, just about every thought I have, finds its way into an article. In addition to hubpages and demand Studios articles, I've completed one novel, and started five others. Frankly, if you are a writer, only severe depression stops you from writing, and sometimes even that does not stop the flow of ideas that become the stuff of articles, editorials, and poetry. I generally prefer song lyrics to poetry, because I can sing them to others, and I hate verse that does not rhyme. It may be the modern trend, but I am not a respecter of trends. When it comes to writing, I have my own style and my own preference. I do what I want to do, and somebody somewhere always appreciates it.

CREATIVE WRITING

I've never quite figured out which type of writing is not creative. Non fiction writing requires creativity just as surely as poetry, lyrics or novel writing. The ideas that produce all writing are creative, so to me, all writing falls under this category. Many people; however, appear to be at a loss for things about which to write. Writing topics are actually as numerous as one's thoughts.

PEOPLE

People make good writing topics. Wonderful people, horrible people, humorous people, and those who leave us outraged and angry. Colorful characters are everywhere, though this is also risky business, as many do not like to discover themselves in your writing.

OPINIONS

Political articles are common, and you can find examples in any newspaper's editorial pages. If you plan to write editorials; however, be sure you know enough about your subject matter to avoid making a public display of your ignorance. A little bit of research may be necessary before doing this type of writing, and the research often changes your point of view.

READING TO WRITE

I have heard it said that no one writes who does not also read. I am constantly reading, and many of my writing ideas come from what I read. Sometimes it is something as simple as an email trying to sell me something, or serving some advertising purpose, that awakens my next writing idea. Sometimes it is an annoyance or an emotion that has been lurking around in my mind for a while, then something I read sparks my desire to write about it. Then there are my passions, subjects about which I read as much as I can find, and write about what I discover.

DEVELOP A PASSION

When people tell me they love to write, but don't know what to write about, I ask them to tell me what their passion is, and draw on their response, when suggesting topics. Some people don't desire to write, but those who do, should have no problem finding topics about which to write. Everyone loves something or someone, about which or whom he or she can write. If love does not inspire your writing drive, perhaps hate will do it for you. Most of us have some deep seeded anger about something we feel is wrong or unjust. Where your passions are, there your writing creativity will also reveal itself. Your passions will also grow and change as you do, so you should never run our of topics about which to write.

IF ALL ELSE FAILS

Just do it. Begin writing about anything at all, and see where it leads you. Published author, Rosemary Daniell, tells her students to write about whatever it is they really do not wish to reveal. She also suggests journaling daily to keep one's creative tendencies alive. Some suggest keeping a notebook of ideas to which you would like to return later. I have used most of these techniques at one time or another, and while writing about the thing you would prefer to keep secret is threatening at times, I have always managed to overcome the problems involved, mainly my own fear. So basically, writing is about allowing the writer in you to just take over. If you are actually a writer, that will eventually happen, in spite of experiencing writers block from time to time.

Very, very good! And excellent advice. There are many writers out there that are constantly writing in their heads but the blank white piece of paper intimidates them! I lobe blank paper, I feel that every time I get to start new...clean...no mistakes...and my creative juices just want to drip on the paper...Good job Valerie

That was brilliant and should give people encouragement to carry out their dreams. Your novels, what type of novels did you write? I love to watch people and get ideas at their actions or even reactions to things which gives me ideas.

Also I draw from my own life. Something gives you an idea and then just twist it to suit what you want and exaggerate it as far as you can. Just a little remark my husband makes I turn it around into something entirely different.

Thanks for sharing this.

This is an excellent article; very insightful and very helpful to those of us who are creative writers and always writing in their heads as well. I am working on writing my seventh unpublished novel and I am working on getting my sixth published.

Hi, Valerie,

Came across your response in a Hub by Lady Guinevere and the usual remarks of what are sometimes referred to as 'Bible Bangers' is Aussie about something 'not being in the scriptures.' Had to concur with your opinion, hence this comment. Yep, I'm going to become a 'follower' I like your Hubs...
