THE GOOD OLD DAYS WERE NOT THAT GOOD

If I Could Turn Back Time
A certain segment of the American population appears to want to turn back time. Many appear to believe the founding fathers created a system that should never have changed. I could not disagree with them more. In fact, if I could turn back time, I most certainly would NOT do it. Here are just a few reasons I think we are living in the best of times.
Health-care
While I support our nation's recent health-care reform and regret that a public option was not also included, current health-care reform is not my predominant reason for believing we live in the best of times from a health care perspective. Medical treatment is better than it has ever been. Many previously fatal disease types have been all but eliminated through vaccines and improved lifestyle. Those that have not been eliminated, such as cancer and heart disease, are fatal less often in many cases, and medical science promises to improve on our current statistics.
Medical knowledge has led to increased understanding of the causes of many disease types, focusing more and more on prevention. We now know reduction in body fat, regular physical exercise and an increased intake of fresh fruits and vegetables in our diets can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and many cancers. We are aware that consistent fitness programs can slow down the aging process, and add energy, alertness, and years to our lives. Our life expectancy has increased, and with it our productive and healthy years are expected to be much longer. In the "good ole days" the life expectancy was about 40 for adult males; however, many mothers and babies were lost in childbirth. Other children were often lost to disease before they reached adulthood.
In the "good ole days" there was no treatment for mental illness or drug addiction. People who suffered with psychological disorders were committed to "insane asylums" for life, with little chance of ever regaining their freedom. Twelve step groups for drug and alcohol recovery did not exist at the time our country was founded, nor skilled nursing care for detox purposes.
Human Rights
The founding fathers owned slaves. For all practical purposes, they also owned their wives and daughters. Women were not allowed to own property in the "good ole days," thus leaving abusive relationships was not possible. Young women who were orphaned could only hope to work as prostitutes in many cases, as respectable jobs were not available to them. Most young women had little choice about who they married. Perhaps that is why people have assumed for years that women have a less strong sex drive than their male counterparts. Apparently, in the "good ole days," the pursuit of happiness did not extend to black people or females.
Education
Not only was there less to learn in "the good ole days," but fewer people had the advantage of learning what was known. Slaves were forbidden to learn to read, and girls were often not taught skills that could be used outside of the home. Young boys often had to drop out of school to work in the fields or go off to war. Today, it is not uncommon for a person to have a college education, while in the "good ole days" only the wealthy enjoyed such privilege.
BIG Government
Today, many people object to what they refer to as BIG Government, usually pointing towards social programs and the creation of federal jobs produced for the purpose of jump-starting our failing economy. The same people never appear to have a problem with government that is big enough to legislate morality, forbidding behaviors they feel to be morally wrong. The same was true in the "good ole days" at the time of the Salem Witch Hunts of 1692, when countless women were burned at the stake for being suspected witches. Many of these women were mentally ill, or simply lived in a manner not consistent with mainstream society.
Recently, a conservative candidate stated he did not feel women who were "having sex" with their boyfriends while single should be able to work as school teachers, yet ironically, nothing was said about men who had sex outside of marriage with their girlfriends or others. The war rages about whether or not homosexuals should be permitted to marry. Is a government that makes use of sex police to control the behavior of its citizens not a big government? Which is bigger? A government that imposes taxes on the rich to feed the poor, or one that tries to police what its citizens do in the privacy of their bedrooms? Add to the list a government that is able to enforce anti-abortion laws. Would it not require a big and intrusive government to do this? Still, everything from the enforcement of anti-abortion laws to the burning of non-Christian holy books has been advocated by those who claim to support smaller government.
Thanks, but no thanks. A government that can force all women of childbearing age to prove they are not pregnant on a monthly basis is no small government, and neither is one that can question anybody with brown skin without cause on the streets of Arizona, or burn Korans because it deems itself to be a Christian Nation. It seems conservatives do not actually want a small government, only a big government that enforces their narrow views on the rest of us. Thanks, but no thanks to the sex police, the book burners, and the true advocates of big government. I reject "the good ole days" and big government, for one that supports the poor, feeds the hungry, and provides health-care to those of us who can't afford to pay for it.

It's true, valeriebelew, that the "good ole days" had more than their share of drawbacks and injustices. They affected millions of people's lives severely. In fact, the entire history of the world is replete with conflict, poverty, hardships, slavery, war and violence. I've looked at those olden days somewhat differently, which I've written about in this hub: http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Old-Days-Werent-So-Bad
Val Val Val! tsk tsk tsk, you know better than to dwelve into subjects only I know about! LOL, We the conservatives do not want to return to slavery or detrimental ideaology! (the women as servant thing might be cool) OK just kidding, anyway we want to return to the things that made this country great! Things like less regulation on business, so they can prosper and hire more employees, Less intrusion by big government! Less dumbing down of American people! etc. Here is a fine example, New Mexico just passed a new law that says you cannot build a house or move a mobile home on spot that will allow water to run under and stand! We needed a law for this? first of all most don't want water under their homes, second even if they did why is this the governments job to pass a law saying they cant? How much money did NM spend on this? NM is broke and getting broker because of stupid regulation! If New Mexico would lift permitting just on storage buildings for 3 months there would be a huge increase in backyard storage buildings probably creating several millions in revunue for business and taxes for the state! .......get the point?
I agree with you Valerie.
In 1905 the life expectancy for men was 47 years and for women 50. A large percentage of people who would like to return to the "good old days" wouldn't be alive to make the wish!
Less business regulation might create more jobs but there would be no minimum wage and no middle class, just the very rich and the very poor. The trickle down theory is crap.
I could go on, but suffice it to say that if people want to go back to the old days they'd better like wiping their asses with leaves rather than Charmin.

Good to see you writing Val. My " back to the basics .. let nature be nature" thing will never roll with you huh kid? (laughing)

I have this same hub waiting in the account! Oh my you mind reader.
Two new awful videos are being passed around on the net right now.
One even mentions Woodrow Wilson in it's propaganda. I'll send the links if you want. They are nasty and they are from the RIGHTWRONG party. Not that there are any Democrats after election but these whackos are too far out whacker that ever before.
I believe THIS video is CODE to WHITE crackers.
Woodrow Wilson was the most outspoken bigoted president that I have seen between 1900 and now!
Of yes! The RIGHT is a hate group. Evidence? It's on several of my hubs.
One video has Obama with ALL the other presidents - but Obama has his foot on the constitution.
For all the Republicans - I don't have amnesia about the eight years of the KILLING presidency of DICK CHENEY. Oh 0- do people still think the idiot was responsible for all the murders of that administration? Oh my. Cheney goes back several nut job presidencies. The right wing party will never, NEVER, do anything for the common man. Of course that other party talks a better game but there are no democrats after election. For some folks above that claim to know history! Bah! Humbug. Let's have a show-down! Not here- televised! Me against all the brilliant minds that I will admit are stronger- but just filled with poison. History is written by the winners and we have won a lot. Even when we lose - we don't get the real picture. Great hub!
Yes! The right wing is more for slavery than any other party- world wide!
I completely agree with you Valerie. The Constitution was created to be an elastic document because they knew they created an imperfect document. It was a result of compromises. The worst of these was the hideous institution of slavery. We needed a war to get rid of that one. People seem to look on the old days wistfully when things get a little rough. We have steadilty improved things as time has gone on. This was the genius of the Constitution and our founding fathers. Change comes often too slowly but it does change. The Health Care bill is another example and I hope that continues to improve as things move along. It was another example of compromise from obstructionism.
Hi, When you put it like that, I understand totally! I often wonder what the novelty is of wanting the past, I think it is a glamorised notion that totally bypasses their common sense! Would I like to live in those times? No! cheers nell
I think, actually, a lot of that nostalgia comes from the fact that, as you say, in the "Good Old Days", voting, etc was reserved for a few.
Check out my hub "We The People".
Also, might I post this to my FaceBook profile.
So let me see if I get this right. Democrats are good and republicans are bad? I'm a liberal conservative, or so I'm called by the so called conservatives, but if any of you know me, you know I think both parties suck. I think extremes are counter productive. Since I see this comments section being used for plugs, I'll do a little plugging. (The Man With No Pants First Address To Congress) Whether anyone goes there are not, I'd like to thank my liberal brothers and sisters for the toilet paper, and a few other things.
Interesting thoughts on the good old days. Here's a thought. Would WE be better off living in the old days? Certainly not I would agree. All we know is this highly developed society. Having grown up and being a part of this development, we'd be miserable. But were THEY better off? That's another question that could be debated for ever without a winner.
I'm not a liberal hater like some people on my side of the room. I hope the haters on both sides just go on hating while the intelligent people from both sides get together and make some good things happen.
Whether I agree or not isn't important Val. The point is you make anyone reading this think about this subject from both sides, and that's a good thing. Yes I did miss you. (laughing my ass off)
jim
Val, Hi! What you said is very true, but I wouldn't mind going back to my neighborhood if it went back also. H
Hey Val,
I'm heading over to read your latest. I know it will be a doozie. I just published a piece that will have you and your followers wanting to scratch my eyes out, so I'll drop a link. (I'm back too)

Hope things are picking up on your end, and it's good to have you back swinging.

Val-
I certainly love the times we are in now. I would not even be around if I was living in another time-with the medical issues I have been confronted with - solutions weren't even available 30 years a go.

Wow. Interesting viewpoints, but how many different subjects can you use to justify a totally different topic? Not all conservatives are bigots. Not all liberals are socialists. Big government is a concern to all thoughtful Americans.
How many of the wonderful advancements in medicine were discovered in a government lab? If the Feds ran the labs, very few of your examples of the 'good new days' would have occurred. Most come from pharmaceutical companies and private labs supported by private donations. When was the last time Canada was cited for superior health care techniques or implementation? Are you unaware of corruption in the medical approval process by big government? Do you know how slow the approval process is in America?
I guess bigotry doesn’t exist in socialistic/communistic countries? Try and get an unfair ruling overturned in Russia. Laws of equity do not depend on big government; just smart populations electing fair and honest politicians (may be an oxymoron). Freedom is the trade-off for big government. If you want the Feds to rule every aspect of your life, how you think, and what is considered moral, then you should pray to the Lord Obama, or the Reverend Bush, or your favorite politician. I choose to follow a different leader for my moral views.
Re-read American Romance’s comment regarding New Mexico’s idiotic laws. Multiply that by 1,000’s and that’s what we have in America. How much tax money is used to write, enforce, and re-write these laws? How many are contradictory? How many are really necessary? We have 1 lawyer for every 300 citizens. Why? And you want more? valeriebelew, I was not offended. I guess I just have a terse style of writing. Of course, you have a right to believe what you do, as do I. I just wanted to point out that Big Government solves no problems, and in fact compounds many existing ones, as opposed to Smart Government and caring leaders, in my opinion. I think you wrote an interesting Hub on an interesting subject.
I agree 100% wth your comment. My idea of big government is one that has undue influence on its citizen's behavior and freedoms. Apparently the same as you. You guessed correctly, I'm not a right-wing nut case, just a conservative. No one should have the right to dictate their morals to others, and no one should have the right to step on your morals. The examples in your comments are not representative of the conservative main-stream, at least not any conservatives I know. It doesn't matter if you're talking about sex police or health care police, big government is bad government. Thanks for explaining.

Good stuff here, Valerie. And so true.
