STANDARD POODLE: MORE THAN A FASHION ACCESSORY
67RESPONSIVE, RELIABLE COMPANION
THE STANDARD POODLE
Sometimes judged as merely a fashion accessory, the Standard Poodle is much more. This breed is responsive, easy to train, and has served as both a guard dog and retriever. A loyal and reliable companion animal, the Poodle has a lower than average incidence of skin complaints and does not molt, meaning it is the ideal dog for those who suffer from allergies. The Standard sized Poodle is calm, and not given to the hysterical behavior for which its smaller relatives are so well known. The Standard Poodle is a working dog, at heart, and was initially used as a duck retriever. Its French name, Caniche, actually means duck dog.
APPEARANCE
The Standard Poodle can be found in any solid color. His head is well proportioned and dignified, and he has slightly slanted eyes that appear fully alert. His muzzle is not pointed, and is long and straight. According to Bruce Fogle, DVM (Dogalog), the hair on his tail and feet increase his buoyancy and power while swimming. His weight range is from 45 to 70 pounds (20.5-32kg), and he stands about 15 inches tall (37.5-38.5 cm).
BREED HISTORY
Fogle reports that drawings depicting the Poodle by artist such as Albrecht Durer, reveal its nature as a water dog (Fogle, Doglog). In fact, the grooming style common to Poodles today, is based on historic grooming for the purpose of water reduction over the hindquarters while working.
PERSONALITY AND CHARACTERISTICS
The Standard Poodle is a good dog with children, and is suitable for urban living. It can withstand both extremely warm and cold climate conditions, and is easily obedience trained. The dog requires little grooming, but does need consistent professional clipping of its coat in order to keep up appearances. You can expect your Standard Poodle to live up to 15 years of age.

Great hub! I thought the part about them being able to withstand any kind of climate was interesting. My Standard hates the extremes of weather. We're in Florida and he hates the heat. He'll hardly leave the air conditioned house. In the winter, he loves to have a sweater on and prefers to be snuggled up with a blanket. I think I need to have his thyroid checked!
