LAKELAND TERRIER: FEARLESS AND NIMBLE
68FEARLESS AND NIMBLE
LAKELAND TERRIER
Originating in Great Britain, the Lakeland Terrier was an agile and ruthless hunter who was adept at working the rocky ground of his homeland's Lake District in pursuit of his quarry. Like most Terrier types, it was willing to take on animals much larger than itself. The breed probably descends from the same extinct black and tan terrier stock as the Welsh Terrier, and has had periods of show-ring popularity. While the Lakeland Terrier has even won Best in Show in Great Britain and the United States, its number remains small when compared to the more fashionable breeds (Bruce Fogle, DVM, Dogalog). The Lakeland Terrier is a single minded animal, suited only for owners with patience.
APPEARANCE
The Lakeland Terrier has a long mustache that covers his very powerful jaws, and dark eyes that look intent and fearless. His ears hang forward, and he has a dense , harsh topcoat, and a tail that is carried high when he is standing. Colors include wheaten, blue, red, black, blue/tan, and Black/tan. The weight range of these dogs is from 15 to 17 pounds, and the height range is from 13 to 15 inches.
BREED HISTORY
Fearless and nimble Lakeland Terriers were orignally bred and used by farmers in Northern England to protect their sheepfolds from pedators by hunting and killing small mammals. It is believed the breed originated in the 1700s.
THINGS TO KNOW IF CONSIDERING A LAKELAND TERRIER AS A PET
As family pets, terriers are hugely entertaining, and have boundless energy. They love rough and tumble play, and usually make excellent city pets. They do have a tendency to nip, which must be trained out of them, and excessive yapping should be controlled early. They are competent watchdogs and defenders of their realms. Lakeland Terriers are suitable for hot , sunny climates and they can also thrive in cold climates. Given safe conditions, they are content and safe as outside pets. This dog is difficult to obedience train, and may not get along with other dogs due to its strong predatory instinct. You can expect your Lakeland Terrier to live about 13 or 14 years.

I read an interesting gem about lakeland Terriors: that they were so prone to bite other dogs some of them had to be carefully watched. The nipping part sounds really believable--Nice hub!
