LADY KILLING ALL TOO EASY

Van Der Sloot admits to some involvement in the crime in a recorded video.

Leaving with his unsuspecting victim.
Leaving with his unsuspecting victim.

DOES HE LOOK SCARY OR SEXY?

Truth is the dude looks like my niece's husband, not scary at all. In my younger days, I could have, and did, fall prey to a similar person. My hair stands on end today when I imagine what a willing victim I would have been. The guy is sexy, charismatic, and has the all American boy image. As a child, like many white southern little girls, I was taught to fear black men, not the boy next door.

HOW I DISCOVERED VAN DER SLOOT

I don't presently have access to Direct TV or cable, for financial reasons, so my news input is limited to the Internet. I wasn't looking for Van Der Sloot, nor did I know he existed. I was reading hubs written by my favorite authors, and American Romance had written a hub about him. I hate political hubs, especially those written by my friend, American Romance, and this did not look like one, so I decided to read it. It caught my attention, and I did some further research on the guy, watched the video he was tricked into making, and viewed some other sites about him.

Van der Sloot's appearance and mannerisms remind me of someone other than my brother in law. His attitude and behavior call to my memory someone with whom I became involved almost by accident years ago. The person of Hunter, antagonist character of my first novel, Undercover, had a striking resemblance to Van Der Sloot in both appearance and the casual manner in which he addressed the act of murder. I always knew I would eventually write a book about him, and it is now completed, published one chapter at a time to Hubpages, and soon to be edited by a professional editor.

The scary part about Van der Sloot, and Hunter, is that they are Lady Killers in every sense of the word. Women knowingly make bad choices that result in the act of dying for these guys, though the women involved are unaware this is in the plan. They believe their bad choice is only a sexual or emotional risk, when in fact it is a choice between life and death. When I remember the casualness with which I entered most sexual encounters as a younger woman, it makes me shudder.

Hunter was not; however, such an encounter. His attraction to me was found in my unwillingness to engage in sexual behavior with him. Perhaps that is why I live today, while others, including my Shetland Sheepdog, Fancy Free, were not that lucky. I have no way of knowing if Hunter ever committed murder, but my knowledge of him, and awareness of human nature at this point in my life, tell me he well could have, and was certainly capable of doing so. I'll never know for sure if Hunter was a victim of meth addiction, or if he had a hidden predatory nature I did not see until after I was captured in his web, but there is no doubt he was dangerous at the time I left the meth lifestyle against my will, and entered treatment.

If my book, Undercover, has one continuing message, it is "Kids, don't try this at home." I look at the picture, the second one on this hub, and know inside my heart of hearts, this young woman could have been me. Girls, young women, I can't stress this strongly enough. Do not leave with strangers in bars, from parties, or any other social gathering. Obviously, the guy does not appear dangerous. Neither did Hunter, Van der Sloot, Ted Bundy, or many others. You may be looking for excitement and you may find it, but the excitement may be more than you wanted or bargained on. In the end, it may be the end. Don't seek love, passion or an adrenalin rush in dangerous, unstable circumstances. it just isn't worth it.

Great write again Valerie. It's amazing what things women will fall for. Incredibly though- they never fall for my things!

Now Micky, don't be so down on yourself, or perhaps you were only kidding. Some guys thrieve on manipulating women, and become pretty good at it. I suspect this guy is one of those. In the case of Hunter, the manipulation went on for months, and was pretty convincing. Scary today to know how convincing it was. thanks for commenting on my site. (: v

Oh this is so interesting, you know he's killed more than just the one or even the two we know of. I would love to see that video, is it a youtube video? Can you add it to this hub? So interesting and the Hunter similarities are haunting. Thanks and Peace :)

katiem, I will try to find the video again. I wish I had saved it at the time, but this hub was written long after I first read about Sloot on American Romance's hub. I did quite a bit of research, and saw that many hubbers had written about this guy, already. Therefore, I decided to just add my own slant to the already expanding volumn of hubs, rather than add to them. Finding the video and adding it; however, would be a good addition to this hub. Thanks. I also enjoyed your hub about Charlie, one of my favorite hubbers, friends, and on line poets. I also like Kidd Rock, but that's another hub being born. LOL. (: v

Oh wow I came back and watched the video and this guy is amazing and cold with NO concern for anyone yet a strange view of people, what a sick individual... WOW thanks for the great Van Der Sloot videos. Peace :)

Thanks for coming back, katiem. The shock is that he talks so casually about someone who just died at the hands of a murderer. Though he doesn't admit to killing her, his cool, causual attitude, and sexualization of someone who just died, speaks volumns. Unfortunately, I recognized the attitude right away, and it sends chills up my spine. (: v

The Vander Sloot story is one that should cause a good shudder in anyone's spine. If you look at most serial killer's (and that's really what he is) pictures, they ALL look fairly normal. Those guys who we always think are "spooky" are rarely the ones to fear. Very rarely. If nothing else, Vander Sloot is a reminder to everyone to simply be as cautious as one can be in life. It doesn't mean you won't still fall victim. But, everything in life is a risk isn't it?

Definitely, Springboard. Serial killers usually DON"T look spooky. They just look like normal people, usually dressed pretty nice, and bathing daily. These poor homeless people you see, rarely do any damage to anyone other than themselves. Occasionally, someone who looks weird is also dangerous, but not nearly as often as someone like Van der Sloot looks normal, but turns out to be a psychopath. Thanks for responding to my site. (: v

Thanks again, Springboard. All I could think when I first saw this guy was he looks like my niece's husband, not like a killer. But its looking more and more like he is a killer. Either that or he has the worst luck of any guy I know. LOL. Doubtful. (: v

Great wake up call hub, Valerie. Look at Ted Bundy. I am sure that he appeared to be just a good-looking charming guy and to those college girls he was "the older man" who was showing interest in them. As parents, we try to teach our little children not to go with strangers. We have to keep teaching them that while they are becoming young adults. That's pretty tough to do during those years of "Ten Feet Tall And Bullet Proof". There is always that remark, "I never thought it could happen to me" that really shows you the mindset. Thanks for a good hub! WB

Yep, Wayne Brown, today I'm as moral as the driven snow is white, but we all have our growing up history. Scary to think of what can happen to kids during that time. Thanks for visiting my site. (:v
