HUBPAGES: INCREASING HUB TRAFFIC AND ETHICAL EARNINGS
75ETHICAL EARNINGS
WHY INCREASE HUB TRAFFIC?
Most of us would like to earn a little bit of money from our writing ability, and if the truth were told, most of us would like to earn more than a little bit of money through writing. Many of us have dreams of publishing bestsellers, attending writing conferences, book signings, and increasing our earning potential on a daily basis. It is difficult to put in the time necessary to become known as a writer if much of your time is spent on some little job, making enough money merely to survive. My greatest challenge at present is still found in petting the tiger's head until I can get my hand out of his mouth. That said, I have managed to increase my traffic, and earnings, within the last month, and would like to pass some of these secrets on to you.
FIRST THINGS FIRST
You are not going to have overnight success writing hubs or articles of any kind on line. Building an audience base, and increasing the flow of traffic to your writing is a time-consuming process that requires long hours of work. It is a daily effort that requires work and attention on a consistent basis. Passive income is a myth that may work for a day or so, but quickly falls from a traffic perspective with even a small amount of neglect. You are not going to earn money enjoying wine, women (or men) and song, while doing little or nothing to increase the flow of traffic to your sites. Once you understand that, you are well on your way to earning ethical income.
ETHICAL EARNINGS
Ethical earnings can be the product of any informative article that is honest and offers the reader something worthwhile. It is very important to have several themes about which you tend to write that draw particular audiences. This is true because one theme will only draw a certain audience, and that greatly limits your traffic potential.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROFESSIONAL ARTICLES, AND OPINION HUBS
When I was new at hubpages, I tended to write mostly articles related to my chosen profession, the field of substance abuse. I also wrote politically charged articles related to poverty and my recent financial struggles. While I drew readers, most of these articles lent themselves mostly to public service type ads, and these ads draw no revenue. While some treatment centers advertise on the substance abuse articles, it is rare that anyone will select a substance abuse treatment facility on line, or even click on such an ad after reading the article. It is much more likely readers will learn from the article, then contact someone whom they know and trust for recommendations about treatment centers. While the articles are informative, and I do not regret writing them, they do little to earn revenue on line. I will continue writing such articles, but not with the expectation of earning money.
HUBS ON CANCER PREVENTION
After losing interest in writing hubs for about four months this winter, my creative juices began to flow again after an experience related to breast cancer screenings that lasted for about three months. My older sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, and my own risk of developing the disease caused me to want to learn all I could about how to prevent it. At the time I began doing research and writing about cancer prevention, I had less than $10 in my hubpages earnings total. Is it any wonder that I had gone from writing professional articles and opinions on hubpages, to instead keeping a private journal? My motivation for writing about cancer prevention; however, was not about earning revenue, but about learning, and informing others of how to prevent cancer. I quickly learned also, that the cancer prevention articles were more likely to produce clicks on the ads beside them, and earn revenue. Why? Because vitamins and supplements are small items, more often sold on line. The same is true of green tea, dark chocolate, and turmeric and other spices. Although my intentions are still informative, my articles are earning more revenue. They are still ethical and informative, but some items simply lend themselves to on line ad clicks, while others do not do so.
INFORMATIVE HUBS THAT ARE ALSO DESIGNED TO SELL ITEMS
There is nothing unethical or wrong with writing some articles with the sole intent of selling a small product, as long as the product is good or helpful to your particular audience. My recommendation is that you include some of these type articles in your group of hubs simply to increase your revenues, while making worthwhile suggestions, and supplying your readers with information about products that might meet their particular goals. As long as the information you provide is honest, and the product worthwhile, these little money makers can also be helpful to others.
Some articles intentionally attempt to mislead for the sake of profit. Such scams can be found advertising products to cancer patients that "instantly cure all disease," or promising fool proof tricks to writers that will earn them ridiculous amounts of revenue on very few hub articles with very little effort. These are no more than low life attempts to take advantage of desperate people; however, marketing worthy and useful products is not unethical, and can be considered a service to those involved. It can also increase your earnings on hubpages.
DON'T LOSE SIGHT OF THE GREATER GOOD
Don't forget why you loved writing initially, and please return to your first love. Don't get so lost in attempting to earn profit that your writing loses quality, and becomes nothing more than an attempt to earn money. Writing is a form of art, and good writing requires substance. For every article you write with selling product in mind, you should write six or more with the sole intention of informing your readers. In the end, your well researched informative articles will be the ones to draw traffic to your site, and if you have dreams of ever becoming a serious writer, these are the ones that will eventually take you there.
SHARE YOUR HUBS
I have accounts on Tweeter, Facebook, and My Space, and share my hubs on all of the above. One way to increase your revenue is to share your hubs daily, and sometimes share them more than once. The same readers are not present on these social media sites at all times; therefore, you can send the same article through more than once, and attrack new readers. Those who have already read your article will not reread it, but some people will be seeing your article for the very first time on the social media site. I have noticed an increase in hub views each time I run an article through, even if it has been put out there many times before.
So keep writing, keep informing, stay ethical, and keep sharing. Even if you never get rich, you will be performing a worthwhile service to others, and engaging in an activity that increases your writing skills. With improved writing skills, you never know where you might end up.

An interesting perspective which I enjoyed. Thanks for sharing.
Great perspective. I appreciate your tips. Voted this hub up.
...more things to remember, really worth my time reading this, I like your thoughts ma'am, earning while helping could give us more satisfaction and be happier!...two thumbs up! ^.^
Thanks for the info. It really helped.
Very well written article. Thank you for your view of these points. There's so much to learn.
Valerie...lot of thinking has gone behind the creation of this hub. There are many hubs related to traffic increasing ideas. But this one is entirely different and well written. Thanks a lot for sharing.
thank-you for writing this, because I have had the same experience as you and so I devided my hubs down the line, writing some for me (organic health) and then the other side of me marriage/sex which is a huge traffic driver, so I get in both, my favorite hub on using green products for the home which I love pales in comparison to how many times a week should married couples have sex as far as traffic goes, so I will do like you and write both!
Good post... er... hub. I particularly appreciate the "ethical" slant. Seems to me the SEO experts who use loopholes to promote their work spend all their time chasing new loopholes as Google and Bing discover their slight of hand and close the loops. Doing it right in the first place may take more time to work, but ought to be more reliable.
@ Valeriebelew
That is so true. Lot's of people really don't read your stuff. It's pretty obvious. It's good to hear someone else tell you tips on how to increase your traffic and earnings in reality. Most people try to sell you ideas on how to make tons of money overnight. You have the right idea.
I like to diversify my articles with topics that advertisers enter bidding wars for on Adwords. This will also boost your revenue. For example, if you write articles on technology, you will find that your clicks will generate way more than articles on baking. There are way more technology advertisers on adwords for tech and gaming etc etc... You just gotta find that sweet spot of categories to write in to start seeing the big payout clicks.
Loved reading your hub btw. Thumbs up!
Nice hub,well don Valeriebelew !
Thanks for your well thought out perspective. It's refreshing to see attention to the ethical side of all this. Writers who only focus on making a buck tend to turn off readers. Keeping in mind ways to benefit the readers and serve the greater good are values that make the work worth doing. I also value your heart in sharing your personal concerns with learning about breast cancer.
Thanks for your comment, hikeboy. Nice to be appreciated.
