GREEN TEA FOR WEIGHT LOSS BENEFITS
68CAN GREEN TEA HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT?
COULD THE SAME SUBSTANCE SO WELL KNOWN FOR CANCER PREVENTION, ALSO HELP US LOSE WEIGHT?
It almost seems too good to be true. First we hear talk that green tea could help prevent cancer, and reduce its ability to spread from one part of the body to the other. Then we begin to hear that it can assist us in our attempts to lose weight. Just how good is this stuff, and just how realistic are the claims?
I must admit that when I first started hearing that green tea could assist us in reaching our weight loss goals, it sounded too good to be true; however, after researching green tea as an aid in increasing metabolism, it all started making perfect sense, because it is precisely the same mechanism that aids in our defense against cancer, that also aids in our weight loss.
INSULIN SPIKES, INFLAMMATION, AND FAT STORAGE
Insulin spikes are strongly related to inflammation, as well as fat storage. It so happens that catechin polyphenols, the same cancer fighting enzymes responsible for decreasing the insulin spikes that increase inflammation (strongly related to cancer tumor growth), also inhibit fat absorption and slow down the movement of glucose into fat cells. Green tea may regulate glucose levels by decreasing the rise in blood sugar that spikes insulin and results in the storage of fat.
So not only is it not too good to be true, it makes perfect sense, as both benefits involve basically the same enzyme action. Obesity and high body fat have long been associated with cancer, and the American Cancer Society recommends that we remain at our recommended body weight, and exercise vigorously for at least 30 minutes a day, six days a week. Is it any surprise that the same substance that reduces our risk of cancer, would also work to boost our metabolism?
WARNING: DON'T DEPEND ON GREEN TEA EXCLUSIVELY FOR WEIGHT LOSS
While green tea can assist with weight loss goals by increasing our energy level, boosting our metabolism, and regulating our insulin levels, it would be a mistake to depend only on green tea to obtain our weight loss goals. Green tea should be used in combination with A sensible diet including a variety of fruits and vegetables, a reduction in sugar and high calorie food intake, and regular physical exercise.
