GREEN TEA: DON'T MISS THE HEALTH BENEFITS
68MATCHA, JAPANESE GREEN TEA
WHAT ARE THE DOCUMENTED HEALTH BENEFITS OF GREEN TEA?
Due to its high content of flavonoids, green tea has a number of important health benefits that you will not want to miss. Flavonoids are plant derived compounds that act as antioxidants, and green tea is the best known source of catechins. Catechins, famous components of green tea, have been demonstrated in test tube experiments to be more powerful than vitamins C and E in halting oxidative damage to cells. So what does this mean to you? It means that drinking three or more cups of green tea a day can reduce your risk of developing several cancers, including skin, breast, lung, colon, esophageal, and bladder. If any of these are experiences you'd rather avoid, read on.
Green tea has also be linked to a reduction in the risk of heart disease. It appears that the antioxidants in green tea can help block the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesteral, while increasing the presence of HDL (good) cholesteral, improving artery function. In fact a recent study published in Internal Medicine demonstrated a 46% to 65% reduction in the risk of hypertension of those who consume green tea regularly, when compared to those who do not drink it.
HOW TO DRINK GREEN TEA FOR INCREASED HEALTH BENEFITS
First of all, at least three cups a day are recommended every day. Allow the tea to steep for from five to ten minutes (leave the tea or tea bags in hot water) before drinking. This will release the maximum benefits of its catechins and antioxidant qualities. Catechins and its other flavonoids are strongest in freshly brewed tea, so drink it quickly. Also, bottled tea or instant tea lose many of their health benefits, so freshly brewed tea is recommended. Green tea is best enjoyed between meals, since it can impede the absorption of iron from fruits and vegetables. Adding lemon or organic milk can counteract this problem, if you wish to drink your tea during meals.
MATCHA HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Matcha, a Japanese Green Tea, consists of stone ground leaves, thus providing higher concentrations of catechins, vitamins, and L-theanine, nutrients which are linked to greater health benefits in green tea drinkers. These benefits include increased alpha brain wave production. Green tea has been found to be a natural anti-depressant, stress reliever, and energy booster.
Matcha contains ten times the poly-phenols of regular teas. Only two cups of Matcha contain seven times the antioxidants of orange juice, and twenty times that of apple juice. Some research even demonstrates that it may assist in burning fat. Now here is a drink worth trying!
