WELCOME TO THE DOG HOUSE

Welcome to the dog house, home of Sambo the bad dog, and many, many others. I promise you, that though you are in the dog house, it isn't such a bad place to be. I want this site to be an interactive hub for dog lovers, and the site of many interesting and informative hubs and stories about the canine variety, each of whom add so much love to all of our lives. I am currently completing breed profiles on many dog breeds, and hope to eventually cover them all, including those very special mixed breeds, so often abused, and (humanely?????) euthanized for being homeless. My dogs (and cats) are my family, and they are cherished. If the thought of dropping your dog off at a kill shelter, equals dropping your baby off at your local Department of Family and Children's Services office, this is the site for you, because I share your feelings. Please take the time to share stories about your favorite canine friends. We're here to listen.

Now, about the breed profiles, I live with three Australian Shepherds, and one Golden Retriever. At one time I was a breeder, but though the business ceased, the pets remained my children. Luckily, I never had more animals than I could develop personal relationships with, and support small breeding programs, as compared to huge enterprises. I find it difficult to understand how a person can allow a dog to reproduce for many years, assisting with the family income, then ship it off somewhere when it can no longer produce. Of course, I don't particularly advocate nursing homes either, though in some cases, they are necessary. The difference between the two is that while we don't necessarily choose our parents, or when they become bedridden, as breeders, we decide how many animals we will have in our breeding service. If we truly love the animals and the breed, we will not accumulate more animals than the number for which we can properly provide love, shelter, and appropriate care. The practices of puppy mills and so call "humane"???? euthanasia are shameful and unkind, to say the least.

While my breed profiles may not be without blemish, I never intentionally harm the image of any animal, as I have a great love for them all, especially dogs and cats. I am open to new information, and experience that does not agree with the experience of my sources, though I ask that it be presented in a manner respectful to both myself and the dog involved. With this in mind, please feel free to share your dog stories, and comments, including humorous stores about your canine family as well.

The Dog House includes both breed profiles and stories; Please read the caption above the link to assure you are reading what you wish to read. Please understand that the Dog House is a work in progress, as there are over 400 dog breeds, and I have not yet included even all of the profiles I have already completed. Adding profile links to this site is tedious work, and also a work in progress. If you do not find the breed for which you are looking, please feel free to request it, as it may have already been written, and not yet added to this site. I can also do a profile on your specific breed sooner, if it is specifically requested. Thank you for visiting the Dog House, and we look forward to reading your comments.

Valerie I enjoyed the hub - I saw you have three Australian Shepherds! We had a Blue Healer, unfortunately his time has passed - I know exactly your three are up to as the breed has many similarities. We only have the one pom now - we did have 2 poms and a blue healer - and very sad that two have gone but we still have the memories.

Thanks so much for sharing, billy, I can't stand the thought of losing mine. I just try to make the most of every day I have with them. Dogs are such wonderful creatures, and add so much joy to our lives. (: v

Hi Valerie they are so special and creatures whom God has created and only require love and they become faithful and ready at anytime to play, go for walks or just cuddle.

Great series and one that has blessed us all.

I love my collie, Riley, valeriebelew. Before I got him as a puppy, I had read that they can be stubborn. OMG! We were driving home from picking him out at the breeder's....well actually we picked each other....I knew he was the one from the litter I wanted and he ran to me immediately....anyway, we were driving home and stopped along the way for a break. He "decided" he didn't want to go toward the grass where I was headed with him, and sat down on the pavement refusing to move! Then, I could pick him up and move him. Now, he's 75 lbs and is very clear about what he will and will not do! I suppose some obedience school could have helped with this behavior, but I love that about him and reinforce the behavior by laughing when he does it! What really cracks me up about him is that he burps!!! I never before heard a dog burp. He burps loudly and often. Thanks for letting me share a little about Riley. I love the idea of this being interactive.

Thanks kimh, I loved your story about Riley. I don't have a dog who is that stubborn, but my outside cat, Fluffy, is obviously that bad. My stud dog, Sambo, is sometimes determined to have his own way, but he can be picked up at about 40 pounds, so he gives in more easily. Animals also fart, and I once had a cat named Brown Sugar, who was real bad about it, and I noticed it especially when she slept with me. Sambo, the stud, pees inside when he doesn't wear his diaper overnight. It isn't that he needs to go outside; it is that he wants to leave his mark, in case a female dog is interested, or in case a male dog doesn't know who the alpha male is. Neither is very likely to happen in my house at night, since my females have now been spayed, and Pete Jr is the only male dog coming in here, and he is Sambo's son, and knows him well. Sambo hasn't quite figured that out yet, so he usually wears his diapers (two of them) at night. Last night, he and fluffy slept with me, and Sambo had to do the dominant butt riding deal, to let Fluffy know he is the alpha dog, so Fluffy tolerated it until Sambo got tired of doing it. They are so funny when they are together. LOL.

What an awesome idea, and you do such a great job writing about the various dog and cat breeds, Valerie. I agree with what you say about ethical breeding and puppy mills etc...Certainly we took the time to research breeds and breeders in order to ensure that the people who bred our 'babies' did so for the right reasons. Thank you for all the info!

valeriebelew profile image

valeriebelew Hub Author 2 years ago

Thanks MCWebster, there are laws in affect, but most deal with back-yard breeders, and those who aren't licensed, and are actually supported by the big rich giants who run puppy mills. These aren't back-yard breeders, and people need to understand that fact. They are large organizations that have a lot of money, and want smaller breeders outlawed, so that they can get all the business from puppy and kitten sales, yet they are the ones who are uncaring towards the animals and making good profit. Unfortunately, they have enough money to fight new legislation, and to get around the laws that are presently here. People get back-yard breeders confused with puppy mills, and while both can be a problem, they are not the same thing. Thanks for responding on my site. (: v

Valerie, I adore your love and knowledge of pets, cats and dogs. You missed the puppy mill hub I did in honor of my daughters mission, I know you will find this inspiring as Ally visits your cats and dogs pages often.

Thanks for all you do for the love of animals and those of us who love them back :)
