INFLAMMATION AND CANCER
Living organisms have the ability to heal themselves; however, self healing in healthy organisms ceases once the damaged cells are healed. In the case of cancer, the body's natural process of inflammation is instead used to promote cancer growth by continuing to call on nature's natural healing ability to build new blood vessels for the purpose of allowing healing transmitter substances to enter the site of the tumor and promote its growth and ability to travel throughout the body. The body's own healing agents are thus used against it, and instead promote tumor growth to its destruction. The use of inflammation for the purpose of tumor growth and travel, actually confuses the body's immune system, sort of like a negative system of intelligence, and causes the immune system to allow the tumor to grow without resisting it (David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD, Anti Cancer: A New Way of Life; Cancer's Weaknesses; page 41).
OMEGA 3S AND OMEGA 6S
Omega 3s and omega 6s are both essential fatty acids that must be consumed through our diets, as the body is unable to produce them on its own. While omega 6s promote the inflammation process, omega 3s help put limits on it. When these two fatty acids are appropriately balanced, inflammation is promoted to heal wounds, and stopped once the wounds are repaired.
Unfortunately, most westerners consume far too many omega 6s, which are found in meat products, processed and fast foods, and white flower, white rice, refined table sugar, and packaged foods purchased at the grocery store. They consume far too few Omega 3s, which are found in oily fish and nuts. This causes an imbalance, with a ratio of far too many omega 6s as compared with omega 3s. Research has demonstrated that this imbalance is one factor that promotes inflammation, and ultimately allows tumors to grow unchecked by immune system factors.
GOING NUTS FOR CANCER PREVENTION
Eating nuts ( packed with omega 3 fatty acid) can help even the ratio between omega 6s and omega 3s. Walnuts are one of the best sources of omega 3s, and this fatty acid is also found in other nuts such as almonds and pecans.
OTHER FOODS FOR CANCER PREVENTION
While nuts contain omega 3, they are not the only foods necessary for an anti cancer lifestyle. It is recommended that you eat a combination of 29 different fruits and vegetables weekly in order to consume a number of antioxidants that will assist you in the fight against cancer, and drink at least three cups of green tea daily, also an antioxidant. Omega 3 is also often added to diary products, and is present in large quantities in oily fish such as pink salmon. Be aware that nuts are high in calories, and should be eaten in moderation.
