BICHON FRISE

The typical Bichon Frise is small, weighing in at around 7 to 12 pounds (3-6kg), and standing only about 9 to 11 inches high (23-30cm), but a lot of energy is packed into that small body.  The breed is adaptable, happy, bold and lively, according to Bruce Fogle, DVM, and author of Dogalog, and has secured a huge following since its near obscurity in the late 1970s.  Enjoyed only as a companion dog, Bichon Frise dogs are a hardy breed, and farmers have recently discovered that they can actually herd sheep.  Regular grooming is necessary with this breed, and the gums need special attention since tartar build up and gum infection are common.  Unlike many white-haired breeds, the Bichon is relatively free of allergic skin problems.

APPEARANCE

The Bichon Frise is a little white dog who is born with a pink nose that turns jet black as it grows older.  His eyes are round and dark, with very dark rims, and his ears droop and are smaller than those of a poodle.  Although breeders prefer black nails, his nails are usually white in color.  His tail hair falls against his back, but does not press on it.

BREED HISTORY

while it is suspected that this energetic and affectionate breed originated in the Mediterranean region, no one knows its exact origins.  By the 1300s, it had made its appearance on the island of Tenerife, thanks to sailors who brought it there, and by the 15th century, it was a favorite of royals of the region (Bruce Fogle, DVM, Dogalog).

BREED CHARACTERISTICS

The Bichon Frise is very good with children, is suitable for urban living, and requires moderate but regular grooming.  The breed is easy to obedience train, and gets along very well with other dogs. You can expect your companion Bichon Frise to live around 14 years.
